The conference dedicated to the 100th anniversary of V.P.Smolnikov was held in Guangzhou
On March 30, 2015, within the framework of the international humanitarian project “Personality in History”, a conference dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Viktor Prokopyevich Smolnikov (1914-1994), an outstanding Russian physician whose life and professional activity were closely connected with China, was held at the Russian New University (RosNOU) and the P.V. Smolnikov Foundation. Russians Russian Center at the Russian World Foundation at the Guangdong University of Foreign Languages and Foreign Trade (Guangzhou) hosted the meeting.
The first meeting that introduced this remarkable scientist to the intellectual community took place in Moscow at RosNOU in December 2014.
The son of Russian diplomats, V.P. Smolnikov was born in 1914 in Harbin. He graduated from the French Jesuit University Aurora in Shanghai, worked as a doctor for many years and at the same time successfully engaged in scientific activities. In 1938, while still a student, he published a book “On the control of Childbearing”, containing a sharp criticism of neo-Malthusianism. It can be said about this book that its relevance is only increasing these days. In 1954, Professor of Medicine V.P. Smolnikov received permission to enter the USSR together with his large family, which had six children. As a rural doctor, he participated in the development of virgin lands in the Novosibirsk region. Later he moved to Moscow, where he headed the Laboratory of Anesthesiology at the Research Institute of Experimental and Clinical Oncology of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (now the N.N. Blokhin Russian Research Center). V.P. Smolnikov is one of the founders of the Russian school of Anesthesiology. He raised a galaxy of remarkable medical specialists, among whom was his son, Pavel Viktorovich Smolnikov, MD.
In 1976, Smolnikov Sr. prepared two books of memoirs for publication: “Notes of a Shanghai Doctor” and an independent one “The Diary of a Shanhai Physician” in English, but these works were not published in Soviet times. Today, the rich literary and scientific heritage of the scientist finally finds its way to the reader: the Moscow Publishing House IBA has released two of his books for the 100th anniversary of V.P. Smolnikov, and plans to publish 11 more books in the future.
Russian Russian language students from Guangdong University of Foreign Languages and Foreign Trade, university professors and all those interested in Russian culture and the Russian language attended the conference and presentation of V.P. Smolnikov’s book “Notes of a Shanghai Doctor” in Guangzhou. The guest of honor was the doctor of the Russian figure skating team, Philip Shvetsky, who flew specially from Shanghai after the end of the World Figure Skating Championships to introduce the guests to the life and work of V.P. Smolnikov. During the conference, a video call was held with Viktor Prokopyevich’s son, Dr. Pavel Viktorovich Smolnikov, as well as with the head of the international department of ROSNOU, Georgy Alexandrovich Gabrielyan.
We are very pleased that the multiple world and European champion, master of sports in figure skating Tatyana Volosozhar read a message from the President of the Skating Federation of China in a video message to the guests of the conference.
